[16] Arthur Edward Price (1864-1943)
Arthur was born in Dapoolie, on 3rd May and was living at the family home in Greenwich in 1871 and 1881 during the censuses. At the latter date he was a 17-year-old clerk in a shipping office. He then married Gertrude Alice Randle on 20th November 1893 at St Alfege Church, Greenwich.
The Randle Ancestry
Gertrude’s father was Samuel Randle, a house painter. She had been born on 27th April 1873 and baptised the following 25th May at Holy Trinity Church, Greenwich. Her mother was Emily Jane Randle nee Curtis, who had married Samuel in Frome, Somerset in 1872 before the couple moved to London. Gertrude had three siblings, all born in Greenwich or nearby Lee – Caroline Anna (1875), Catherine Emily (1877) and Helen Louisa (1879).
Samuel Randle was born in late 1841 in Withybrook, Warwickshire, the son of John Randle (b. ca 1806 in Withybrook), a farmer with 50 acres, and his wife Hannah (b. ca 1808 in Dadington, Leicestershire). Samuel had three known siblings – Charles (b. ca 1827), Jane (b. ca 1832) and John (b. ca 1838) – and ‘Randle’ was a very common surname in this area. At the 1861 census, Samuel had been a porter in Coventry, Warwickshire.
Arthur’s address at the date of the wedding was 7 Vanbrugh Park Road – the other house owned by his mother. The couple went on to have three children – Kate Marjorie (1894), Gertrude Elinor (1898) and Kathleen Emily (1901).
At the 1901 census Gertrude Alice Price was staying at a London address, 12 Eton Grove, Lewisham with Kate and Kathleen with one servant. Gertrude Elinor, aged 3, was not living with her family during the census because she was then in Brook Hospital, Shooters Hill, Kent. Gertrude, now 37, lived at 7 Lenham Road, Lee, Lewisham at the 1911 census. (Her husband was not at home for the census night.) The children listed were 3 daughters - Kate Marjorie, 17, a Millinery apprentice, Gertrude Elinor, 13 and Kathleen Emily, 10, both at school. The family had one servant living at home.
Arthur E. Price worked for The Niger Co. Ltd in Nigeria, which would explain why he was not at home with his family at the 1901 and 1911 UK censuses. He retired aged 51 (ca 1915).
The Descendants of Arthur Edward and Gertrude Alice Price
Two of their daughters, Gertrude Elinor Price and Kathleen Emily Price were married after the Great War. Gertrude Elinor married Philip John Walk in Lewisham in early 1924 and Kathleen Emily married George H. Hackett in Lewisham in early 1922. Kathleen and George Hackett had two daughters – Joyce G. B. Hackett (mid-1922, soon after their wedding) and Gwendolene J. Hackett in late 1923 – and three sons, Raymond Hackett, in mid-1930 (d. 1932), David (1932-1961) and George in 1941, all registered in Lewisham.
